Kate Beckinsale isn’t obsessed with her age.
Despite being asked about her age frequently, the 48-year-old actress recently told People that she doesn’t “actually think about [aging] that much.”
“I believe that other people appear to be obsessed with ageing in a way that I am not,” she explained. “I get a lot of questions about it.” ‘Heading towards 40,’ they’d say the minute I turned 31, press-wise. And you say, ‘Pardon?’ Nobody ever said that to me when I was ten years old, let alone when I was almost twenty.”
“It’s possible for people to create 40 as a real terrifying moment,” the “Underworld” star added, making being 39 “much harder.”
“In my forties, I’m in a much happier situation than I was in my thirties,” she added. “However, I don’t give it much thought.” People ask me about it, so I think about it, but I don’t think I would [otherwise].”
“Things haven’t started to fall off yet, and I haven’t had any crazy hormone changes,” she continued.
I’m sure that will make me think about it a lot more, but nothing feels radically different right now than it has for a long time.”
Kate Beckinsale is no stranger to ageist slurs, having previously clapped back at a troll who claimed she was “too old” for bikini photos. She’s also debunked rumours of plastic surgery, previously stating that she’s “pissed” when people assume she’s had Botox. Instead, she credits her age-defying skin to good genetics–and a fear of growing a “mustache.”
“I’m really lucky because my mother has really good skin,” Beckinsale said, adding that wearing sunscreen religiously also helped.
“I was terrified of getting freckles in the shape of a moustache on my face,” she recalled of childhood vacations. “I was wearing Factor 70 [SPF] at the time.” I didn’t want a moustache, which is why I applied sunscreen.”
She’s not just a fan of sunscreen anymore; she’s also a spokesperson for MRVL’s Skin Solutions, a line that uses a peptide derived from scorpion venom.
“This particular peptide isn’t found in any other product.” Beckinsale spoke about the brand’s anti-ageing line to the outlet. “At first, I was very concerned, thinking, ‘Okay, there’s something from a scorpion.’ What the f—k have we done to the scorpion, for example?’ My first concern was that we weren’t going to crush a scorpion. No. It’s all done by hand, with extreme caution and gentleness. I’m not sure how I feel about milking a scorpion, but here we are.”
She also told the outlet that Cetaphil soap, Pantene shampoo and conditioner, and cherry and strawberry Chapstick — which she refers to as her “absolute jam” — are all staples in her beauty arsenal.
While she doesn’t dwell on her age, she does acknowledge that being a spokesperson for skincare has become “slightly more interesting” to her over time.
“Of course, when you’re 19 years old, you’re going to have great skin,” she said. “I believe people are more interested in ‘How do you avoid turning into a walnut overnight?'” says the author.
